Colleagues,

In case you’ve missed the advertisements in the Modesto Bee, please note that Boston University religious studies professor Stephen Prothero will be speaking on the relation between religion and politics in American public life at Central Valley High School in Ceres on Saturday, October 6 at 11:00 AM. Prothero, a highly accomplished scholar who has commented on American religion on numerous television shows and in many magazines, is author, most recently, of Religious Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know…and Doesn’t. His talk is this year’s installment in the American Heritage Scholarship lecture series. A Modesto Bee book club discussion with Prothero, which I will moderate, will take place at 2 PM at the high school.

Given recent discussions on our campus about the recent Greg Laurie event, and President Shirvani’s piece in yesterday’s Bee, Professor Prothero’s visit seems timely. I hope that as many of you – and of any students with whom you come in contact – as possible will join the conversation.
